All about us
H C Grimstead was founded in the 1900s at 62 High Street in Ruislip
The story of H C Grimstead starts in the army in the First World War. Two comrades-in-arms began a friendship – Seymour Collings (known as Sid), and Frank Challis (Known as ‘Old Frank).
After the war, Sid Collings purchased some surplus army vehicles and started a road haulage business, while Frank went back to his previous job in the funeral profession, working for Henry Charles Grimstead, who was known to all as Harry.
In the early 1920’s Sid Collings bought out Harry Grimstead, who left the company, but the trading name of H C Grimstead was retained.
H C Grimstead officially became a limited company in 1927, and soon the firm expanded from the single premises in Ruislip to seven funeral homes, covering Amersham, Chalfont St Peter, Eastcote, Harefield, West Drayton, and Uxbridge.
H C Grimstead continues to have locations in these seven locations. The high levels of service provided to the communities in these areas ensured that H C Grimstead gained a reputation for the highest standards in the provision of funerals – a reputation which continues to this day.
“Over the decades the seven funeral homes provided many thousands of funerals for the families of Middlesex and Buckinghamshire, often with second and third generations of families returning to make arrangements with their local funeral directors.”
By 1990, H C Grimstead was being run by Lorna Smith, granddaughter of Sid Collings. Together with her husband Ian, Lorna ran the firm for 12 years. In February 2002, they decided to retire and found new owners for the business.
The work carried out at the funeral homes today demonstrates the commitment to maintaining the highest standards, employing the best staff working in high quality premises, supported by a distinctive modern fleet.
H C Grimstead has, for many decades, served the communities and the surrounding areas in the most caring and professional manner. It is our belief that, with the dedication, support and expertise that we pride ourselves on, we will continue to provide the high standards set by our forbears, retaining traditional values while seeking always to improve.
